Reflection: Rigor Flip it! Compare it! - Section 4: Independent Practice

After the kids become fluent in doing this activity on their own, increase the rigor by using number only cards (no "representations" of quantity) and eventually move to 0-20 rather than just 0-10. Differentiate by keeping those students who need more practice working within 10 while some move to 20. You can also increase in increments - to 12, to 15, to 19, and then w/i 20.

Never teach a concept and just leave it at status quo. Always increase the challenge and rigor by making it more complex. Remember that the steps in the activity is not what kids need to master, but rather the mathematical concepts learned within the game.
