Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Let's Sum it Up! Summarizing Nonfiction Text Day 1 - Section 5: Closure


I was impressed with what my students could do today. The passages were a perfect fit for them to try these out. I had some students who struggled with the wording because it does take some synthesis skills to pull that information together. I'd just ask, what are the ideas you're struggling with? How can we reword those? How can we pull those great ideas together so that we're not restating the whole paragraph?

As I moved around, I heard a lot of collaboration about the key words as well. I was excited to hear the cause and effect words that were being noticed in the frog passage. This was also something I pointed out to a few other groups that seemed to get stuck. That frog passage has a hint of problem and solution, but that's in the very last paragraph and doesn't really offer a solution; it just says we need to save them. This was a great opportunity to keep working on those text structures.
