Reflection: Student Ownership A Class Book of Subtraction - Section 4: Independent Practice


The best way for some one to learn is to do it and teach it. In this lesson the kids go from listening and doing to creating. When they create and present, they take the task more seriously and it brings the thinking to a higher level. Having the kids create a book to share with other classrooms brings the learning to an even higher level of accountability because they are now doing for groups other than their own. I had a few kids who had to redo their contribution to our class book, but once they completed the job to the set expectation they were very proud of their work. They were also able to help others with creating a page for our book.

Big Idea: Kindergartners love to draw, color and share their work. In this lesson they are given the opportunity make a class subtraction story problem book by drawing pictures to represent the stories.
