Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines The Choice is Yours - Section 3: Wrap It Up


One of my students is very meticulous about his writing, to the point of starting over if he thinks it looks the least bit sloppy.  He prefers using a computer to actually hand-writing anything and gets easily frustrated with some of my exit tickets because he says he doesn't know what to write.  As you can see by his answers, we came up with a format that helped.  I suggested that he begin each of the three sentences with an I statement, like "I use" or "I think", then add a "because" to wrap up the sentence.  He was skeptical at first, but after I walked him through the first sentence with leading questions like "When you look at all these parts, what do you do first to make sense of them?" and "How do you organize all the information about a function?" he was able to write the next two sentences on his own.
