Reflection: Real World Applications You're the author! (Author study; Day 5 of 5) - Section 1: Introduction

The implementation of CCSS comes at a time of an explosion of digital resources for instruction. There are now many tools for children to publish their work through blogs and other instructional resources. This lesson could have provided me with the opportunity to have my students publish digitally and invite the author to view the work on line, and perhaps comment on it. Publishing with digital tools corresponds to CCR W.6, but the idea is to get students to do it, not to go home and do it for them, which is what I would have had to do at this point.

This is an area of professional development for me, as I work to become familiar with such digital tools and find the best ways of teaching my first graders to use them, without impacting the required curriculum. My school is in the process of transforming itself into a personalized learning campus with an emphasis on art and technology. It will be exciting to see where this takes us and our students.

Unit 4: Writing informational/explanatory text
Lesson 6 of 10

Objective: SWBAT complete a final draft of their informational paragraph.

Big Idea: Why write anything if it's going to be discarded? Students find joy and ownership when we allow them to "publish" their pieces.
