Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Sound Boxes and Magic - A Phoneme Segmentation Lesson - Section 1: Teacher Background Knowledge and Preparation

This lesson is another great way to teach phoneme segmentation.  I can't even begin to tell you how phonemic awareness has helped  prepare my students to become good decoders and spellers. If you'd like to learn more, here is a great article that shows how important phonemic awareness is when learning to read.

I wanted to create this unit to show you a variety of ways for students to practice phonemic awareness.  As I was planning out my school year I knew I wanted to focus on segmenting and blending every day.  However, I also knew that if I didn't have several kinds of activities to practice this same skill my students would groan and say, "Not this again!"  By having several activities in my tool bag I can switch things up each day and keep my students motivated and engaged. I think you will find this too and you will really see your students begin to soar in both reading and spelling.
