Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Writing Individual or Collective Narratives (Day 1 of 2) - Section 4: Student Learning Activity


I realized that any descriptive narrative presupposes some kind of communication with the readers which creates a picture. I explained to my students that when they write their narratives, it's important to appeal to the readers senses, to make them feel and see  the imaginary hero or image in their story.

I found that many students felt puzzled with the questions of what it means to appeal to the readers senses and how it is possible to appeal to these senses. As I engaged them in reflection through discussion, they seem to begin to understand the idea of making their imagined tales come alive for the reader.  If you have any specific techniques that have worked for you I'd like to hear them as well.

Objective: SWBAT write a narrative by developing well structured imaginary events using details and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the events.

Big Idea: Students are asked to answer the question "What happened to all of them?" in a collectivize or individual narrative.
