Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Sorting by Kind - Section 5: Closure

It's important to be strategic in planning your lessons. Be aware of common pitfalls encountered in sorting with kindergarteners. Young children often get bogged down with color and size because they are easier to see. To sort by kind means they must see beyond the color and the size of the object. They must see only ducks, cows, fish, etc without taking color or size into consideration. if your kids are struggling with this concept, sorting mats with different sceneries often help. I've included a variety of half sheet sorting mats for you to use with your kids. These may help them to "see" the kind and not the color and size.
