Reflection: Intervention and Extension Poetry: Writing Quatrains - Section 2: Mini-Lesson


Quatrains tell a mini story with parts that rhyme, so I tell students to decide on their story first before they try to write each line. For example, my story was about a kite. I thought about the first line and came up with a word at the end that I felt would be easy to rhyme. I did the same thing for the second line and then the rest was easy to write. Quatrains can actually have different rhyming patterns, but for the sake of simplicity for third graders, I present it just using one.
