Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Myth Madness: Arachne & Athena - Section 2: Experience Learning

A great conversation come out of our reading today: students could not believe that the word "arachnid", meaning spider, came from the name "Arachne" from Greek mythology!  They thought this was SO cool!  For students to begin to develop a conceptual understanding of how impactful Greek mythology has been, not just in our culture, but in all cultures, just by seeing how we've gained a word from their stories, was incredible!  My third graders thought this was so neat, and of course, having an idea of what myths are coming up next for them, I prepped my third graders for other discoveries by tasking them with looking for other connections to our world as we read other myths in the coming days!  What other words have we gained from Greek mythology?  Are there other sayings or phrases that we use that came from Greek mythology?  How else has Greek mythology "left it's mark" in our culture?  What a great conversation today!
