Reflection: High Expectations Looking Back, Looking Forward... - Section 2: Getting Down to Business

Ah, the last week of school.  The weather is getting nice, and students (and, who are we kidding, teachers too!) are looking forward to summer break.  It can be difficult to get everyone to settle in and stay focused for the last few days.

Add to that, those teachers.  You know, the ones who start showing movies right after the standardized tests.  It is hard to resist the siren song of Netflix, but I urge you to continue to keep students focused on school.  The kids will have three months to goof off.  For now, we have to utilize every moment in the classroom for focused learning!

Not only does this type of lesson keep kids focused during that last crazy week, it's also a good opportunity for closure.  My colleague, who teaches math, reminds me frequently that the ELA teachers get to know students in a way that other content teachers don't.  As we interact with texts and write about them, it is only natural that students reveal themselves to us.  It isn't fair if we end that year of deep exploration with a swift kick in the rear and a wave.  Take the time to draw out the farewell...

Parting is such sweet sorrow...
