Reflection: Essay Writing Cause and Effect With "Why Mosquitoes Buzz In People's Ears" Day Four - Section 1: Teacher Background Knowledge and Preparation

At the end of the student packet I have students write an opinion about what they think might have happened in the story if iguana had just walked away from mosquito in the first place and not have put sticks in his ears.  In order for us to have tagged standard W1.1 we would have had to  have written an entire opinion essay.  However, I find it quite helpful to incorporate questions into our student response packets where students have to express and justify their opinions.  I'm able to focus in on students using the correct vocabulary when writing their opinions.  My class worked on many other lessons where students had to write their opinion so we didn't use our clue word chart in this lesson.  However, I'm including it for you here Clue Words for Opinions.pdf if you'd like to use this resource with your class as you teach this lesson.  Students also have to cite evidence from the text to justify their answers.  This also helps to lay a strong foundation for students before you actually start to teach opinion writing on a broader scale.
