Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Ocean Research Project - Section 3: Research and Writing


The standard for doing a research project really worried me.  I had anxiety just trying to plan it in my head.  Now that it is over I don't know why I waited until the end of the year.  It was fun.  I waited for the theme of the ocean because I knew I could come up with plenty of information to use.  Now I think I could do a research project for every theme after the winter break.  I would take several days to do it so we wouldn't live and breathe it all day for a day.  I think it would be done easily in 4 days.  Maybe even 5 days with the fifth day being the day we make our presentations.  Then we would have time for posters.  Day 1 - chose teams, Day -2 research and write team information charts, Day-3 write research notes and sentences Day -4, pictures and posters Day -5 give presentations.  It would go even faster if I had class helpers/volunteers to come in and help with the posters.  This was a great experience.  My students had fun and seemed to enjoy the work.  If a research paper was not in the common core standards, I would not have even tempted it.  Now my students know what a research paper is and are not afraid of all the steps that are involved.  They are ready for first grade research projects.

Objective: SWBAT engage in class and small group discussion to identify necessary information to write a research paper and present it to the class.

Big Idea: We will divide into teams to learn about ocean creatures. We will write a research paper and orally present it to the class.
