Reflection: Diverse Entry Points Mathematical Modeling: Linear Functions Design Project - Section 4: Linear Art Project

One of the great things about this project is that it can be differentiated for a large range of students.  A student who struggles with even basic lines can do the project with only horizontal and vertical lines.  An advanced student can be required to use only diagonal lines or non-linear functions.  The one place many struggled was finding the domain.  I have a feeling that domain is something we will need to work at all year.  Here is a sample of Student Work.  This student created a nice simple design that included accurate equations and domains.   It was interesting to watch which student drew the design first and then dealt with the equations and which drew the design with the equations in mind.  Frankly, those that drew with the equations in mind (like my student sample) had an easier time of it.  This is part of the strategy and thinking that adds to this assignment (Math Practice 1).
