Reflection: Student Led Inquiry Comparing Decimals - Section 2: Exploration


Using a student-led inquiry approach to help students reach today's goal provided many opportunities for learning. 

For example, in this conference, Finding Equivalent Fractions, I was able to help guide students as they realized the difference between 1.05 and 1.50. One of the students was misapplying the rule "Just take away the zero." He was thinking of 1.3 = 1.30. 

The more student-driven lessons are, the more opportunities teachers have to discover and address individual student misconceptions.

Comparing Decimals

Objective: SWBAT compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size and using a number line model.

Big Idea: Students will categorize decimals based upon their relative sizes and then they will place the decimal cards on a number line.
