Reflection: Real World Applications Stories in Stone (Rounding to the Tens Place) - Section 2: Initial Question - How Old Are These Rocks?


Content connections don't work for everyone but this is what I believe, based on both research and personal experience.

Students retain more (concept paths as well as basic skills) when what they learn is embedded in content.  Additionally, they are more likely to be interested in integrated content, and this also leads to a greater ability to retain and apply what they are learning.  Finally, students learn more when their teacher is truly interested in the subject matter, and this is why, when possible, I embed core content into high interest topics that I also find enjoyable and worthwhile.  The obvious prerequisite is that whatever choices I make are first and foremost guided by alignment to the standards, but once that requirement is thoroughly and verifiably fulfilled, I am free to enrich upon the core material.  This is one of the many aspects of teaching that I truly love, that I am always learning new subject-area content and finding ways to bring that into the classroom.  I also pay careful attention to students' interests, and when a topic in which I am fascinated fails to engage the children, I revise those lessons.  So, everything here has been kid approved!
