Reflection: Checks for Understanding Language Review: Identifying figurative language and figures of speech in magazines - Section 4: Closure--Identify what you don't fully understand


As I anticipated, students struggled to remember allusion and parallel structure.  It seems these two concepts are always difficult.  If the parallel structure isn't obvious (same words, similar phrases separated by commas, etc) then they have difficulty.  Most groups couldn't find an example of parallel structure in the magazines so they had to create their own.  Here are a few examples they developed today,

Mary likes swimming, running and skiing.

Josh want to fish, to read and to run. 

These examples are very simplistic forms of parallelism.  I definitely need to expose them to some examples of more complicated forms of parallel structure.  I am going to look around for examples from novels/texts.
