Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Lesson Two: Completing a Plot Diagram about the Facts Behind Science Fiction - Section 3: Independent Practice: Plotting Events


This lesson is being extended a day due to my students having minor issues with understanding the futuristic elements of their dystopian short stories. The reason why I place so much emphasis on story elements is so students can grasp the evidences needed to develop higher order thinking in its impact on other parts of the story. If teachers are just introducing this type of literature, I would recommend students doing various things with each selected text so the impact of story elements could be understood in various ways. However, teachers can easily move students through different pieces of dystopian literature or even a novel to show how these elements look similar in longer pieces of work. 

The instructional decision behind doing the plot diagram was to (1) allow students more time with the text and to (2) focus specifically on elements found in the story that made it believable. The portion of the diagram that challenged students the most was the questions that were devised to help students elaborate on thier responses. While many groups followed that lead, others still gave short, condensed answers that still proved correct/incorrect in retelling the story from beginning, middle, and end. If I wanted to know where students struggled with plotting the elements of the story, it couldn't be determined by the short answers. However, this behavior is a great teachable moment for the importance of elaborating their opinions about a topic.
