Reflection: Online Resources Friendship and Competition: Introducing a theme in the novel - Section 2: Poll Everywhere


It seems like the English department is often suspicious of technology.  After all, as I have said on many occasions, all I really need is a book, some paper, and a pen.  While I think that technology is often overrated by so many, it does provide a nice diversion and hook for students of the iGeneration.

Today, my students loved whipping out their phones (and yes, almost all of them have them) and texting an answer while the "live results" materialized on the screen in front of them.  For some, it might have been just enough to keep them interested in what we were doing.  So, that's a plus.

For me, little apps like Poll Everywhere and Class Dojo are big time- and hassle-savers.  I don't have to collect little slips of paper anymore or pull out a set of mini-whiteboards, pens and erasers.  I type up the poll, they text me, and we look at the results.  It saves a lot of time.
