Reflection: Problem-based Approaches Verbal Brawling: Oral Reading of Act I of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet - Section 2: Whole Class Oral Reading

Since we will have a mock trial at the end of our reading of Romeo and Juliet, I will constantly be going back to the question, "Who is responsible for Romeo's and Juliet's deaths?" We are approaching our reading of this play as a problem. We need to figure out who to put on trial---we'll need to pay close attention to what happens in order to solve this problem.

I think the decision to approach the play this way was a good one because I heard a few groans when I told students that we would be reading Romeo and Juliet. When I mentioned the mock trial--they sort of perked up. Instead of making excuses for the play, I decided to make it more relevant to them.
