Reflection: Lesson Planning Poetry: Writing our own - Section 2: Setting a Purpose

I found the “I Am” poem years ago when I first started teaching. The format was a little different, but the idea was the same. It listed several sentence starters and students completed each about themselves. Because I did not create the template used in this lesson, I did not include it here. However, it is a fairly common poetry type and dozens of examples can be found through a simple Google search.

The second poem was completed on a simple, blank form I created. Students could create any sort of poem here. The characteristics chosen in today’s activity were selected specifically for my students. These were the types we worked on most and students should have somewhat mastered by this point. However, as always, choose what works best for your students.
