Reflection: Checks for Understanding Caesar Act 1 , Scenes 1 and 2 --Getting the Literal Meaning Down - Section 3: Wrap-Up


Horror!  Blood and unspeakable carnage!  

This lesson did not go well.  

The students did not seem to be understanding Shakespeare's language very well, and I felt like a sort of caricature of an English teacher (of old), ladling out one line at a time and then explaining what it means and why it  is important.  I am doubly concerned because we will be doing rhetorical analysis (RI.9-10.6) later in the lessons, and I am concerned that we will be too bogged down to read with that level of analysis and reflection.  

Thus, tomorrow, I  will implement a new strategy: reading groups.  The students will read a small section together and use the google comment function on their laptops to interact with the text.   First, we'll read it briefly as a large group in order to get the basic meaning (RL.9-10.1), and they they will comment on it and question the text selections for character motives (RL.9-10.3) and begin to look at the methods of persuasion--and manipulation!--used by Cassius toward Brutus (RI.9-10.6).
