Reflection: Student Ownership Mentor Text: Ideas in Writing - Section 2: Developing Writing Skills

Students had an easier time plotting their ideas using the Ideas Graphic Organizer.  They liked the layout of this organizer and expressed that they would have a difficult time staying focused on their writing without it.  Students said that it made them think ahead and not only think of a topic, but how to support their topic with details.  Once this is accomplished, they had an easier time putting it altogether.

I decided to use this graphic organizer, because in the past students had difficulty structuring their writing to focus on a central message with supporting details.  Without the organizer to help plot out their writing plan, students lose their focus.  The graphic organizer gives students step by step guidance to stay on topic.  Otherwise, students will stray off topic and their writing will lack the structure and organization needed to develop a main idea.
