Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Architecture with Shapes - Section 3: Create Shapes


As the students were building different structures, two of the students had created a solid blue design.  I walked over to them to get an idea of what they were trying to build.  I was expecting them to describe a building or a part of a building or the aqueducts of Rome.  They revealed they were building the Tiber River within the city of Rome.  They were using the tan parallelograms as buildings surrounding the river.  When I asked them about how they came up with this idea, they made the connection to our previous units on rivers and explorers within the United States.

Unit 7: Geometry
Lesson 4 of 5

Objective: SWBAT create architectural shapes with squares, rhombi, and parallelograms.

Big Idea: Determining the differences between similar shapes in geometry is more meaningful when the students create architectural structures using the different shapes.
