Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Too Heavy? Too Light? Conversions! - Section 2: Concept Development


As you can see in my reflection video, using a strategy in which students solve problems independently first, and then talk about it with a partner, worked very well.  Students are able to use Math Practice Standard 3 while talking with their partners, and they are able to show what they know.  This helps me in my planning and creating small groups for students who may still be struggling.  When students talk with each other after working independently, they are solid in what they were thinking and can then talk with their partner about strategies and answers clearly.  This helps students that are struggling as well because his/her learning partner often has a clear thought out explanation of their thinking which actually helps teach the struggling student.

Objective: SWBAT solve problems that require unit conversions within the same system.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students work independently to solve problems involving conversions and then present their strategy to their learning partner. The learning partner will then present the partner's strategy to the class.
