Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding In the Pen-Joining Groups in a Ten Frame - Section 4: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment

The students have already had exposure to a ten frame, but it is important to take the time to review this concept.  If students are going to learn how to subitize the number 10, they need to understand the rules for placing objects in a ten frame.  It seems so basic, especially because we have covered this concept before, but I still found the students making mistakes when they were placing the animals in the ten frame.

If this mistake is not caught, these students will struggle on subsequent lessons.  There may have been other students who would have made the same mistake, but the instruction reminded them how to place the objects.  It is always a tough decision as to how much review a concept needs, but when it is a foundational skills, it is better to error on the side of caution.
