Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Wax Paper Activity (Day 2 of 2) - Section 2: Find equations of Conic Sections

I found as the students worked on this project that the majority of questions were about the equation for a parabola.  This example is similar to many of the questions I had from students.  The students were unsure about what the parameter p represented.

Other students had an equation and were unsure if they had the equation correct or how they needed to put it in standard or general form.

When I questioned them about the parabola the usual comment was that the parabola equation is so different from the others that they were unsure of their result.  I can see their struggle. The parabola is the only one that does not put the x and y terms on the same side of the equation.

In the future I will need to do more work with the students are writing equations for the parabola. Every year I find new struggles and try to develop new ways to improve.
