Reflection: Pacing Character Wants and Conflicts - Section 2: Setting a Purpose


For the past several years, our school has been without a building-wide writing approach. In some classrooms, writing is taught as a process or through workshop. In other classrooms, writing is not formally taught at all. So students come to me with various experiences and abilities. Because this was our first attempt at fiction writing, the lessons are short and designed to allow extra time for me to work with students, if needed each day. You may find that these lessons move a little too slowly for your group of students! If this is the case, you could easily combine lessons and tackle two at a time or allow students to move at their own pace through writing process. As always, do what is best for you and your classroom!

Character Wants and Conflicts

Unit 13: Writing our Own Fictional Tales
Lesson 8 of 16

Objective: SWBAT decide a goal for their fictional character, the conflict that interferes with that goal, and when during the story the conflict happens.

Big Idea: Students spend time thinking about the fictional characters they've crafted before determining what that character "wants" in the story, ideas of what might happen to interfere with that plan and when to introduce the conflict in their stories.
