Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Figurative Language: I think it means... because..... - Section 3: Share out


Today's discussion showed students that sometimes the text can support several different interpretations. For example, student 1 and student 2 had different interpretations for the line "David is a single small aspirin on the third shelf" and for the line," Mom is a middle-sized tweezer". David heals the family vs David is unnoticed.  And Mom is picky, cares about their appearances vs mom pulls out all the chaos.  Students used their background knowledge to attach meaning to the lines of poetry. This  was a great way for students to learn that comprehension and interpretation of a poem is an interaction between the reader and the text and that the reader needs to look for clues to support their interpretation.  The students also revised their thinking after hearing what other students said.
