Reflection: Advanced Students Poetry Power - Section 3: Compare and Contrast with Vocabulary


Students have chosen their own poems from those available. Students will have poems that are similar. To extend the discussion on elements, students can find another who also decomposed the same poem. They can then compare their list of elements and be able to explain their reasoning with someone. This discussion requires them to use the vocabulary in the discussion in a more authentic way. 

For advanced students, I might have them write a paragraph that compares and contrasts the two poems. I would like to see these students use the vocabulary in their paragraph. When I have a higher and more complex assignment, I offer it as a challenge and open it to everyone. Many students like the idea of a challenge and the idea that this is not an assignment for everyone.

Objective: SWBAT analyze two poems and write differences that they found between the two.

Big Idea: In this lesson students will begin to use structural elements of poems to help compare the differences between two poems. Using the vocabulary to help them in comparing and contrasting the two.
