Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Now Add the Descriptions and Definitions - Section 3: Partner Work

I am trying to make the students understand that they create a sentence and then describe or define something in the sentence. I call the sentence they create the "detail sentence", and our paragraphs have three details. After each, "detail sentence" is a sentence that I call the "describing or defining sentence," because that is how is connects to the "detail sentence."

The problem is that they don't always make the preceding sentence about a detail. This is evident in the video. I believe more practice, explicit instruction, and some small group conferencing will fix this confusion. When we conference I discuss how the sentence after the "detail sentence" needs to describe or define it. So, there needs to be a connection between the sentences. They should relate to each other. One question I ask my students is: Is there a word in the sentence you can define? I find this to be the big issue in primary grade writing. The students are great at writing details, but connecting sentences to the "detail sentences" is quite a challenge.
