Reflection: Diverse Entry Points Making The Claim - Section 2: Instruction/Guided Practice

Writing lessons are the lessons I dread! Most students hate to write and it can be a painstaking process to motivate them to do it.

Even with a topic as high interest as this topic, I find it difficult to get them writing.  I attribute this to their lack of exposure, do to the heavy focus on reading, and their lack of stamina.  Most students do spend too much time writing.

Knowing this was going to happen, I decided to break it down into very small pieces.  I decided to start with the introductions and go paragraph by paragraph.  This really seemed to help most students feel as if they could handle it.

Chunking the task really allowed students to work at their own pace.  I had some students who were able to keep going, and didn't need the chunking, but for the students who did need it, it proved to be very beneficial.
