Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Review: Multiplying a 2-Digit Number by a 2-Digit Number - Section 2: Independent Practice


It is very important to review.  Sometimes, we think that the students have mastered the skill, but they have not.  By reviewing the skill, it keeps me (as the teacher) on track and lets me know how well my students are applying what they have learned.  In this particular lesson, I was very pleased that most of the students have mastered multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number using the expanded algorithm.  The problem that I have noticed with the few students who have not mastered the skill is that they are not paying close attention to the values they are using.  For example, in problem 58 x 37, I noticed one student multiply the following simpler problems:  8 x 7; 50 x 7, 8 x 3, and 50 x 30.  The student should have multiplied 8 x 30 instead of 8 x 3.  I know that this student understands the skill, but the student must slow down and check his work before moving to the next problem.
