Reflection: Rigor April 22nd Earth Day - Section 2: Application

Have you ever written a lesson plan that you JUST CAN'T WAIT TO TEACH?!  Well, I love when that happens, and this was certainly one of those times.  Unfortunately, my plan did not go as well as I'd hoped.  Kudos to the kids...they certainly gave it a great try, and a good many did well.  For the kids who couldn't grasp this higher thinking activity, I'm sure the period moved very slowly.  Even with music involved.

In the future, I won't be so ambitious with representing each decade.  As I wrote the lesson plan, I was thinking of Earth Day's origin, which is the year 1970 and thought it would be cool to go 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s.  My thoughts just kind of branched (forgive the pun) from that, and it was too much.  A far better idea is to only focus on two songs.  After this activity, they are definitely, "The Landscape is Changing" by Depeche Mode, and, "The 3Rs" by Jack Johnson.  These are easy to understand and compare.

My idea to include, "The Trees" which was NOT Earth Day focused, but a separate challenge of the activity, was NOT needed at this age level.  Although a few kids got that it was about people and government, not really trees, the majority were just baffled.
