Reflection: Joy Harnessing The Wind Part 2 - Section 2: Video: William Kamkwamba


I was very excited to show this TED Talk video on William Kamkwamba to my students. William built two windmills for his family and his village in Malawi at the age of 14. He took scraps to build the first windmill after doing much research at his local library. The video is rich with content. 

I created a template for the students to take notes as we watched the video. I made sure to pause the video to give them time to write. I have taught my students to take notes. The Notes they take include words, phrases and/or pictures.

Because this video contains some important TextFeatures, I made sure to stop and help the students take notice of them.  I asked them the names of the text features and how these features helped us to understand the objects William used to make his windmill.

I believe this had an impact in prompting three of my students to notice how William used the bicycle wheel in moving the windmill to pump the water.

Also, this story on William allows us to talk about where Malawi is found in the world and on a map, which helped my students' knowledge of the world expand. This is a good social studies integration too.

I believe my students were very inspired by William's story. In the writing, beautiful explanation, one student touches upon how William says for us to believe in our dreams. Another students tells us to never give up on our dreams because that is what Williams say. This is priceless. One never knows how we will inspire our students.
