## Reflection: Intervention and Extension Solve One-Step Equations Using Inverse Operations - Section 3: Independent Problem Solving

Students breezed through the guided problem solving.  I did have a few students still struggling with the task.  The City Year assistant in my class pulled these students aside.  For the start of of this section I inserted an impromptu extension. We translated all of the equations into verbal statements.

I gave examples from the guided problem solving section of this lesson.

GP1)  m + 10 = -4     "The sum of a number and 10 is -4."

GP2) j - 8 = -12        "The difference of a number and 8 is -12."

GP3) -14 = b - 3      "-14 is equal to 3 less than a number."

GP4) -25 = -8 + x       "-25 is equal to -8 increased by a number."

GP5) x/5 = -3            "The quotient of a number and 5 is -3."

We did this through several turn and talks.  I tried to hear at least two different statements for each equation.  For example:

b + 17 = -8

"The sum of a number and 17 is -8."

"A number increased by 17 equals -8."

Having a chart like this posted or displayed on the SmartBoard will help students generate statements.
