Reflection: Accountability Meeting Mr. Falker: More Text Dependent Questions - Section 2: Reading the Story and Answering the Questions

In most of my lessons, there is some aspect of group or partner work.  I am a firm believer in allowing students to work together to develop skills and understanding of concepts being taught.  While I believe it is important for assessment purposes for students to work independently, I also believe that two brains are better than one.

There are very few applications in the real world where adults are not allowed to work together. In fact, in most occupations, adults are encouraged to work together- to seek out help, to provide support for coworkers, etc.  Yet, in school, we require students to work in isolation so we "know they know it".

How many text dependent questions do I have to have students complete independently to assess them?  I say it's just one or two.  If I can get them to work together and coach each other, the understanding for each partner is increases exponentially.  At the end of class, I can offer students an exit ticket for assessment if I need to check for understanding and for this lesson, that is what I will do tomorrow.
