Kids love the opportunity to play games in class, and with so many athletes and sports fan - the basketball game is a popular choice :) Breaking the students into two groups also helps foster good communication amongst the students - they want to win, and they certainly don't want to look silly when they get called to the board.

# Volume and Surface Area Review

## Objective: Students will be able to identify the correct procedure and solution for mixed volume and surface area problems.

**Opener: **As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener – **Instructional Strategy - Process for openers**. This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is **mathematical practice 3**.

**Learning Target: **After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended target is, “I can choose the correct procedure, resulting in a correct solution, given mathematical problems involving volume and surface area of prisms and pyramids.”

**Math Hoops Review Game: **This lesson does use the “Math Hoops” template that I downloaded from Smart Exchange, and I modify it to meet my needs in a particular unit. The template does include a teacher notes page that explains how the game and scoring work. Since this is a game, students will need to pay close attention to calculations and units (**MP 6**) to have their answers counted as correct, and will need to work as a team to determine the correct answer and be able to explain the reasoning that supports their answer (**MP 1 and 3**). Additionally, students should employ math tools such as drawing a picture or using a calculator to assist them in solving problems (**MP 5**). Some problems will require students to apply their knowledge, or abstract information from given models (**MP 2 and 4**).

**Instructional Strategy - Table Discussion: **To summarize this lesson, I will have students turn to their shoulder buddy and explain the process for finding volume and surface area of a prism or pyramid. I will also remind students of their test the following day!
