Reflection: Trust and Respect Social Commentary Genre Analysis: Station Rotation (Day 1 of 2) - Section 3: Social Commentary Stations


The afternoon after I taught this lesson, I got an email from one of my students. I've included screen shots of our correspondence so you can see the conversation's progression. (Email OneEmail TwoEmail Three)

This really gave me pause. When I received her email I was struck by her maturity in handling the situation but also stuck about what to do. As I told her in my response, these stations were co-planned with three other teachers and, while I should have previewed the texts more closely, I also trust that none of my peers were trying to influence her the way she thought we were. So where is the balance? Do we only choose "safe" texts in our classes? Or do we risk pushing on soft spots occasionally. I really do try very hard to keep my personal perspective on political, religious and social issues under wraps with students, but I also think it is important to be mindful of doing the least amount of harm. I have 60 students in my class and if I shared a blatantly anit-gay article/piece to show an alternative kind of thinking, it would like offend far more students than the pieces I did use. 

I guess this speaks to a need for a little more whole class analysis and discussion where I can monitor responses and remind students that ultimately, we need to be aware of different perspectives and acknowledge the difference between fallacious reasoning and reasoning we don't agree with. I had thought about finishing the stations in class on Monday, but I think I will just choose a few additional samples to share with the whole class and lead them through discussion that can hopefully help us to think about how we address our messages to our intended audiences without offending those we don't mean to offend. 

In the meantime, I also need to make sure I have a face to face conversation with this particular student to make sure we are okay. I hate that I have to wait two days to do this, but I want to thank her for her maturity and her critical thinking.

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate an ability to determine an author's/artists's point of view by analyzing a variety of social commentary genres in various stations.

Big Idea: We've looked at our novels as social commentary. Now it's time to look at modern examples of this style of writing so that we can begin to think about ways to create our own.
