Lesson 19 of 19
Objective: SWBAT show what they know about solving multiplication problems 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 2x2 digit using area models or expanded form, solving multi-digit word problems and estimation problems.
Review Before the Test
Warm Up and Get Ready to Test! To get students prepared before the test I asked them to think about the review lesson from the day before and the work we did with our videos. We listed and checked off all of the goals for learning and mastering the standards. It was a simple and quick review because I knew this test would take up most of the period. I did allow them to use their timed table charts to ease some of the tension. They have made good progress in the fluency of facts and I am more concerned about assessing the concepts of multiplication. Therefore, I think it is appropriate to allow them to use their math facts.
Administering the Test
This test has been aligned carefully to standards. We had used area model as our main strategy for solving multiplication and showing place value understanding, but students who mastered expanded model were easily mastering expanded model as well. A written paragraph of explanations of area model and using estimation for deciding if an answer is reasonable is included because students need to prove their understanding and not just a calculation. The upcoming PARC and Smarter Balance tests will include writing components and proof through explanation or showing understanding.Multiplication Checklist.: This resource helps with keeping track of student progress. I use it after giving the pre-test and then keep track as students master standards. It helps with my accountability proof.
I passed out this test that is CCSS aligned to all of my students. We read the standards/goals at the top. We read directions together and I asked if there were any questions to be sure that all was understood. We talked a minute about the expectations of excellence in writing. We checked in on the components of good expository writing; Clear explanation with vocabulary present. Check back on the question to see if it is answered, and then edit work to be sure sentences are complete, clear and make sense. Students were seated and ready to begin their assessment using their strategies.
