Reflection: Complex Tasks The Topic Acrostic - Section 3: Share out


The CCSS does not explicitly include poetry writing in the standards.  I talked about this in lesson one of the unit (see "I remember: My Lens")

Burkins and Yaris write, "In thinking about whether or not writing poetry has a rightful place in the Common Core era, we must turn to the document to see how, or if, the authors explicitly address writing poetry.  According to Appendix A, “Narrative writing conveys experience, either real or imaginary, and uses time as its deep structure.  It can be used for many purposes, such as to inform, instruct, persuade, and entertain.  In English language arts, students produce narratives that take the form of creative fictional stories, memoirs, anecdotes, and autobiographies.“ (p.23)

In this description, poetry isn’t specifically cited; however, in a sidebar the authors note, “The narrative category does not include all of the possible forms of creative writing, such as many types of poetry.  The Standards leave the inclusion and evaluation of other such forms to teacher discretion.” (p.23)

I believe that these series of poetry writing lessons are critical to the development of my students' writing voice, emotions, and interests. See for yourself:


The girl who wrote this poem had recently had to give away her large puppy much to her dismay. Writing this poem was a way for her to share her love and feelings about her puppy.


The author of this poem is a very thoughtful, sensitive, and inquisitive student.  I find this piece of writing reflects these qualities.


On the other hand, this student was researching different breeds to convince her family to pick a dachshund as a pet.  She synthesized across the text and pulled out facts to match the letters needed in her acrostic.  This student made a lot of growth from her first acrostic poem where she only used one word per line.
