Reflection: Student Ownership Would You Risk Your Life to Escape? - Section 2: Application


The idea for the mural SLAVERY on the Smart Board wasn't planned. I wanted them to write the list of words that Slavery brought to mind, but it didn't occur to me to make the mural until they were all working on their essays.  As I walked around the room, I noticed how full their lists were, and what thoughtful words they had used.  Putting those words out in front, rather than only in their essays, was suddenly a necessity.  I wrote SLAVERY on the board and started calling kids up by rows to share their words.

Big Idea: The injustice of slavery was an atrocity our students must comprehend.
