Reflection: Checks for Understanding Metacognition: Assessing the little voice inside their heads - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

Reflection: The Comprehension Guides are useful resources to assess student understanding of reading strategies and to provide extra practice throughout the year. All of the Guides that I have created can be used with any book. They are very quick and easy to assess so I can grade them and provide feedback usually the same day. After using the information to group students or re-teach with students that didn’t show secure understanding, I send the Guides home so that parents are aware of the concepts we are working on in class. I also have a crate with file folders (see video) for each one and I keep blank copies of each so that I can use them with students either one-on-one or in small groups. They are nice to have on hand for teachable moments or when you can tell a student needs a refresher with a strategy.
