Objective

SWBAT take pictures of the identified plant parts and then write about the function the part serves for the plant as a whole.

Big Idea

Using i-Pads, the students will take a walk around the school grounds looking for roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds and take a picture of each part. They will then use Google Slides to write about each part.

Setting the Stage

Advanced preparation:  You will need an i-pad for each student.  

The students walk around the school grounds and take pictures of each of the plant parts that we have studied (roots, stem, leaf, flower, and seed).  They then print out their pictures and use them to create a poster of plant parts and the function of each part.  

Our district expects students to understand that a plant is a system that goes through a natural cycle and the parts help the plant survive and reproduce. By focusing on the parts and needs of a plant, I can teach them how the parts have a role that helps a plant get the things it needs to survive.  The unit will end with the class spending 4 days int eh school garden and applying their learned knowledge to the work being done in the garden.

The Assessment

45 minutes

"Today you are going to be working on a final assessment for the parts of the plant.  Your job will be to use an i-Pad to take a picture of each part.  You will head outside and find a picture of a root, stem, leaf, flower and seed.  Once you have them all, you will log into your Google Drive account and share them with Mr. Mongeon (tech integrationist).  He will them print them for you.  You will then cut out the pictures and glue them onto a poster. Finally, you will write about the function of each part.  As you are writing, you can use your science notebooks to help you with your thinking."

Since I am teaching this unit during the spring, I will have a dish of seeds that the students can choose from in order to capture a  picture of seeds.  

Evaluating the Assessment

As I am looking through the posters, I look to see that they took correct pictures and that they were able to explain how each plant part works.  I am not worried about spelling but rather the content of their answer.   

As kids finish, I ask them to explain their posters to me.  By listening to each student, I can gain a better understanding of their thinking and explanation of each plant part.
