I will begin this lesson with a class discussion. We will review what we learned about costs and benefits of using natural resources to create different things to satisfy human wants and needs. I will refer back to our previous lessons Foods and Natural Resources and Fuels and Natural Resources. Referring back to these previous lessons, help to activate prior knowledge which will aid the students in the lesson today. I will remind students that scientists and engineers must also weigh the costs and benefits when not only creating foods andfuels, but also when making other things. I will inform the students that today we will be focusing on the costs and benefits of producing fibers from natural resources.
I will explain to students that one way people use natural resources is by turning them into fibers. I will encourage students to think, pair, share some examples of fibers that are produced from natural resources. Allowing the students to converse among one another, encourages peer discourse in the classroom, while also activating prior knowledge. I will inform students that they will view a variety of print and digital resources to determine how tools, materials, and skills are used to create these fuels.
I will distribute the Costs and Benefits Recording Sheet to the students. I will inform the students that they will be expected to complete this worksheet after viewing all of the resources. We will review the questions together, prior to reviewing the print and digital resources. Reviewing the questions together before taking a look at the resources, helps the students understand the expectations of the assignment, while also giving the assignment a purpose. As a class, we will review the print resources Fibers, Silk Cotton, and the digital video resource Natural Resources: Wool. Students will be allowed additional time after the last resource is viewed to complete their worksheets
Students will transition back to the carpet for a whole group discussion. We will discuss the costs and benefits of using natural resources to produce fibers. We will also review how creating these fibers help to satisfy human needs. As students review their responses, I will encourage the students to elaborate on their thinking to ensure that the students have fully understood how creating these fibers do indeed have a positive and negative effect. To wrap up the lesson, I will ask students how does weighing the costs and benefits of using natural resources to produce fibers help them to understand more about natural resources. I will allow time for students to explain their answers.
