For students to be ready to observe we have to get our notes ready. I ask the class to divide a page of their notes into fourths. One of the team members will bring their seed trays to the group in order for the observations to take place. At each observation students will write the number of the observation and date. I let students draw and write their observations.
Once the trays are with each group student can open them and begin looking at their seeds. Some have more growth than others and I want the group to only draw and take notes on what is happening in their tray. Students need to note what is happening to each seed even if it was nothing. At each observation, I remind them to look very carefully and draw everything they see. If there is a sprout or opening that they document the size, shape, and length of it so they can compare to other observations in the future.
Once the data has been recorded, I ask the class to share what was happening in their trays. Students talk about what was happening and what was different between groups. One student asks if we can move the trays around on the window sill that they are sitting on in order to give everyone the same opportunity to get the best sun. I ask the class what they think. Students discuss why this sounds fair and why this might help each group get results and take the sun out of the equation. I like that they are thinking this way and this demonstrates the need for discussion. Students get to process their thinking and talk it out in order to make the learning their own.
