Objective

SWBAT use scientific knowledge to explain how their design is eco-friendly.

Big Idea

The fun starts here. Students have lots of cool information about eco-friendly building systems and products. In this lesson, students begin to design a floor plan, thinking about the best way to solve the design problem.

Design Ideas

15 minutes

At this point my strategy is to bring in a real world application. I explain to the students that they have a client that wants to build an eco-friendly building. Depending upon what the group is designing, I explain that they will not be building the building, they are submitting a design solution. 

Students use their reference document and they go back to the preliminary design from Part 2. They re-examine the preliminary design and discuss as a group the changes they made made upon the research.

My strategy is Developing Design Solutions. I ask students to improve upon their first design to draw a floor plan, with dimensions of their idea. Looking at the Eco Buildings Design Ideas of both the homeless shelter and the animal shelter, the students are beginning to get an idea of the design process.

Explaining the Designs

30 minutes

After students have their three designs, they must make a proposal for the client. This is a short, formal writing piece explaining each design. I explain, "Architects want to give their clients choices. Offer the client choices in eco-friendly materials as well as in floor plans." Students incorporate their research in the explanation of each design.  

This is hard for students because each of the designs is distinctly different. I use a strategy called Get up and Share. Students go to partners and share their design ideas with a partner. My intention is give each student an audience to present their design. In addition, if they feel inspired by a friend, they can change their design.

Communicating the Design

30 minutes

Students take a good look at their design idea and determine which is the strongest solution to the design problem. At this point students are only thinking about the floor plan of the building. I use a strategy called Get up and Share. Students go to partners and share their design ideas with a partner. My intention is give each student an audience to present their design. In addition, if they feel inspired by a friend, they can change their design.
