The lesson will begin with a whole group discussion about the different technologies that are available to cool and produce different changes to objects and materials. Students have been working on a research paper in writing, that involves the changes in technology over time to suit human needs and wants. This discussion will set the foundation for this lesson. Next, we will discuss, the freezing point of water which is thirty two degrees Fahrenheit. This discussion will provide the students with the background knowledge for the lesson. I will ask the students to think about how cooling changes the physical properties of materials. I will provide time for students to think, pair, and share their ideas. I will ask them to reflect on how materials change once they are frozen and what materials they have observed freezing in the past.
Students will transition back to their tables. I will provide each table with four plastic, capped cylinders. Each cylinder will contain a different liquid at room temperature. The liquids will include distilled white vinegar, apple juice, vegetable oil, and water. I will instruct students to record the observable properties in their science journal. Next, I will ask students to make a prediction about how cooling each liquid will effect their observable properties.
Next, I will distribute a second set of cylinders. Each cylinder will have the same type of liquid and the same amount of liquid. However, the liquids will be frozen. I will instruct the students in recording their observations of the frozen liquids as well.
Once complete, students will complete their Making Inferences worksheet.
When students have completed their Making Inferences Sheet, they will transition back to the carpet. Students will discuss their inferences and determine if the predictions that they made at the beginning of the lesson were true. Students will review the data collected to conclude their investigation and determine how cooling affects the properties of different liquids.
