I Need That!-Further Exploration of Our Basic Needs

Students will be able to identify basic needs by categorizing them in a game.

Big Idea

Students will have fun playing this game that allows them to classify the different basic human needs.


10 minutes

For this portion of the lesson, I use my SmartBoard.  If you have a SmartBoard, the file I Need That easily be downloaded and opened.  If you have a different type of interactive whiteboard, you can still use this lesson by opening the file in Smart Notebook Express.  Click here to download. I gather my students in front of the Smartboard.  I have cards with each student's name printed on.  These cards are used for selecting who will come up to the SmartBoard.

I open the first slide (SmartBoard Slide 1) with the lesson objective written in "student friendly" terms.  There is a content objective and a language objective to help focus on vocabulary expansion for my English Learners (ELs) to be congruent with SIOP instructional techniques (Click here to learn more about SIOP). I read these objectives aloud for my students.

I can tell a friend what need a certain thing satisfies

Slide 2: I ask the students to tell me what a need is.  I record a class answer on the Smartboard.  

Slide 3:  We list the basic needs of humans.

Slide 4-8:  We talk in detail about each need.  I ask the students why it is a need and what are some ways that need is satisfied.  

Slide 11: It is now Turn and Talk Time.  This part of the lesson allows all learners, especially English Language Learners to practice their expressive language and build vocabulary.  The students have assigned Turn and Talk partners.  I ask them to hold hands with their partners and hold their hands in the air so I know that everyone has a partner.  I then say to them, I want you to tell your partner what need this satisfies.    I give them time to talk to their partner and when it is obvious that they have completed their discussion, I call on a student to share their discussion  I ask the student to phrase the answer as a complete sentence (i.e.Pizza meets our need for food.)

We then move to our seats for guided practice.

For this activity, you will need the That's What I Need Game game, included as a PDF with this lesson.  Up to 6 students can play with one game, so print the number of games you need for your classroom.  You will need to print enough game boards.  The game boards are two per sheet.  I laminate all pieces for durability and then cut apart the game boards and the pieces.

I explain to the students, We are going to play a game about meeting our basic needs.  We all have air to breathe, so we need to take care of the other four basic needs that we have.  We are going to do that with this game.  You will each need a game board.  On the game board, you see pictures of our other basic needs, food, clothing, shelter and water.  It will be your job to collect one card that meets each of those needs.  You will put the stack of cards in the center of the table.  When it is your turn, you turn over a card and place it in the correct place on your board.  For example, if I got a muffin, I would place it on the food square.  You need to tell why you are putting it on that space.  I would say, "A muffin is food, so I am putting it on the food square."

You want to try to collect all four needs.  If you draw a card for a need and you already have the space filled, you need to say, "Pass" and place the card at the bottom of the deck.  Sometimes, the card you draw may not be a need.  It might be a "want".  If that happens, you need to tell why it is a "want" and then you say pass and put it at the bottom of the deck.

You will keep playing until someone gets all of their needs filled.  That person is the winner of the game.  If there is time, you can start the game again.

The students start playing the game (see Video).  I circulate around the room and encourage their discussions.  I want them to be able to tell why as this is the basis of developing important argument and discourse skills that support NGSS Scientific and Engineering Practices #7, Engaging in Argument from Evidence.
