The goal of this lesson is for students to show what they have learned about Newton's First and Third Laws. This assessment shows what students have learned about free body diagrams, inertia, mass vs. weight, and action & reaction forces. The assessment that they take usually takes the entire period for some students. To assess all of the learning targets, I choose to give them an assessment that includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions and free body diagrams. I like to have a variety for this test because it helps me to see what students know in multiple types of questions. Students will use the models that they developed for forces (SP2) as well as explain and support answers using their knowledge from Newton's first and third laws (SP6 & SP7).
Each section focuses on a different skill or concept of the unit. The first section is entirely multiple choice questions, focusing on Newton's Third Law and analyzing forces acting on objects.
The second section focuses specifically on the relationship between mass and weight as well as identifying action and reaction forces for Newton's Third Law.
The third section focuses on drawing free body diagrams and labeling forces as well as determining net force or equilibrium.
The final section requires students to watch videos and answer questions about Newton's First and Third Laws in real life situations. The first situation is an egg drop trick and the second is a collision similar to this clip. The third is a demonstration that I did in class with a piece of plywood cut in a circle that has a removable edge.
Overall this was the best test of the semester. The students did pretty well on all of the sections except for the multiple choice questions. I believe that those who did well on the multiple choice questions were the students who truly understood the material. There were much better grades on this exam with the content focusing on the conceptual instead of graphs and equations.
